On 25th June, the Prosperity Institute welcomed the former prime minister of Australia, Tony Abbott to discuss his latest book, Australia: A History. The book details Australia’s story, from its colonial foundations to its emergence as one of the world’s prosperous democracies. It also explores the country’s evolving national identity and the institutions that have shaped modern Australia.

Introductory remarks were given by Paul Coleman, Prosperity Institute’s CEO, followed by a short virtual introduction from historian Tom Holland. The event was chaired by former cabinet minister the Rt Hon Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, fresh from interviewing Tony Abbott on his own GB News show.

Abbott reflected on the early relationship between British settlers and Indigenous Australians, using the story of Bennelong and Colebee who were captured on the orders of Governor Philip before Bennelong later became an important intermediary. He also discussed Australia’s approach to irregular migration, arguing that firm enforcement was central to the country’s success in dramatically reducing maritime arrivals.

Tony’s book is available to be ordered from Amazon here.
