On 30th September, the Prosperity Institute welcomed the Rt Hon Suella Braverman MP KC, the former Home Secretary and Attorney General, who is currently the Reform UK spokeswoman for Education, Skill and Equality, to discuss her new book Patriot: Empire, Betrayal and Hope.
The memoir discusses her family’s diverse origins in East Africa and Mauritius, how her parents came to the United Kingdom, what it was like for her growing up in Thatcher’s Britain, and her experience as an MP and Cabinet Minister in recent Conservative governments.
The event was chaired by Guy Dampier, the Senior Researcher on Nationhood at the Prosperity Institute, who moderated a discussion between Suella Braverman and Chris Bayliss, a Contributing Editor of The Critic, on the themes of immigration, identity and belonging covered in the book. Suella discussed why she thinks she is British but can never be English, while Chris discussed how too many grants of British citizenship were devaluing the entire concept.
